2 - HAZARDS IDENTIFICATION

* Asbestos is listed as a confirmed human carcinogen by IARC.

See Section 11: “Toxicological Properties” for potential health effects

3 - COMPOSITION/INFORMATION ON INGREDIENTS

Ingredient

Proportion

Rubber binder

<15 %

Fibers

<60 %

Inert inorganic fillers

<35-50 %

4 - FIRST AID MEASURES

Eye Contact :

Inert dust, rinse with water.

Skin Contact :

Inert dust, wash with soap and water.

Inhalation :

Asbestos is encapsulated in binder. If asbestos dust is created from the product, inhalation may result in long term health effects.

Ingestion :

Inert dust, not a hazard.

5 - FIRE FIGHTING MEASURES

Suitable Extinguishing Media Water, carbon dioxide, powder extinguishers, foam extinguishers

Hazards from Combustion Products In case of combustion, the same gases are produced as with burning rubber. The following may be produced in case of fire: Carbon monoxide; carbon dioxide; sulphur oxides; nitrous gases (NOx); irritating/caustic, combustible as well as poisonous carbonisation gases.

Precautions for Firefighters and

Special Protective Equipment Breathing apparatus and eye protection must be worn to protect from dust, fumes and burning rubber

6 - ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES

Emergency Procedures Fire: See Section 5

Personal: See Section 4

Environmental: No known environmental hazards exist.

Methods and Materials for

Containment and Cleanup Approved vacuum cleaners with high efficiency filters (HEPA)

conforming to AS3544 or equivalent must be used to clean areas.

Additional

In the case of improper use (see Section 8) fine dust may result. Adequate suction and filtering of the exhaust air should be ensured.

7 - HANDLING AND STORAGE

Handling

Care must be taken as the material may have protruding wire that may cause laceration. No special precautions necessary when handling the material in its finished form as the synthetic mineral fibres are encapsulated in a rubber matrix. However, whenever further processing of sheets/gaskets is undertaken, the potential for the release of fibres exists.

Storage

Store in cool dry location. Avoid sunlight and contact with oil and chemicals as this will shorten the shelf life. Under acceptable conditions, no deterioration can be expected for three/four years after which product loses flexibility but does not release fibers.

8 - SPECIAL PROTECTION

When subject to operations that create dust levels higher than 10mg\m3 (Nuisance dust) use dust Collection and /or dust respirator.

10 - STABILITY AND REACTIVITY

This is stable material under normal use, handling, and storage conditions. Shelf life is measure

in years. In service avoid incompatible media .The importer can provide chemical resistance data upon Written Request.

11 – TOXICOLOGICAL PROPERTIES

Route of Entry :

Chronic Exposure :

Toxic Effects :

Inhalation of asbestos dust has shown to cause cancer. Smokers have

an increased risk of lung cancer when exposed to asbestos. No

adverse effect in skin contact, eye contact or ingestion. Acute

No immediate reaction to overexposure.

Long term overexposure to asbestos dust may cause asbestosis, lung

cancer and mesothelioma of the pleura and peritoneum.

Listed as a confirmed human carcinogen by IARC (Group 1)
